Nena has had a bad day at school after doing poorly on a math quiz. Her uncle, El Mundo the Great Wizard soon realizes that Nena's math force is weak. Nena is determined to learn her arithmetic facts. El Mundo is concerned that Nena will rely only on memorization so he brings out his magic clock to call upon some Great Thinkers to help her out. With help from Archimedes, Galileo, Leonardo da Vinci, Mozart, and Cleopatra, Nena soon realizes that understanding math is much more than memorizing rules. Mathematics can actually be exciting!

Hi, my name is Susan Jarema, I am a mother as well as a writer, publisher, and music producer. I now spend much of my time visiting schools, libraries and conferences promoting ways to inspire math and family learning.

What does your math force look like?I want all children to grow up loving math. Math and thinking skills are necessary skills for our next generation. Math will be easy if children enjoy it and become confident. Parents and teachers can help by making math fun. In fact, math can and should be exciting! No child should grow up afraid of numbers.

I have always found combining reading and math a wonderful way to encourage math for not only my own children but also the students in my workshops and children in our local math club. I, however, did not find any good resources that helped kids understand why they needed to get the basics down. So I decided to write my own book!

I wrote this book to help children conceptualize (in a fun way) the need for learning the basics in math and to help them understand the importance of building a solid foundation. Children can visualize through an imaginary math force how math is learned in layers and that learning the basics will help them understand higher level mathematics later. Other concepts addressed include goal setting, ways to practice, and the need to develop an understanding of how numbers work together. For parents, this book presents ideas on how to approach teaching your own child math by helping them to discover patterns and asking thought provoking questions.
