Googol Learning

The Past Several Months!

Here's a summary of the past several months... regularly scheduled posts will begin soon!

January - February 2007

This has been conference month for me. I got a chance to sit in on a few workshops at the BCAMT math conference last weekend and enjoyed an entertaining presentation from Ray Appel of Zapple Consulting. He has put together two short funny math videos that show clearly the need for developing mental math skills. Visit the Googol Learning Channel on YouTube and look for:

  • Algorithm Versus Personal Strategy
  • Calculation Versus Estimation

Also check out one of my other favourites:

The Googols got to meet Robert Munsch during his visit to the Port Moody Library for Family Literacy Day. Even though we are both up against each other for the 2007 Canadian Favourite Artist award, we all decided to be friends. And the kids decided they love both math and reading!

January was a very exciting month for the Googol Power puppets who also got to meet Charlotte Diamond at a French concert in Coquitlam. She sang many songs including our long time favourite, Je Suis un Pizza (from the album, Qu'il y ait Toujours le Soliel) which you can hear on our Radio.

Here's a picture from a very fun and lively Discovery Multiplication home workshop in Langley. We even did skip counting on their trampoline!

Mental Math

Judy, Susan, and David

We got to see Judy and David perform in Maple Ridge. It was a wonderful show and Mozart was very excited to meet the celebrities from the show Boom Box on Tree House Television. You can hear some of their songs on our radio or check out audio samples from the Math Jams Series.

November 2006

The original MATHemMANIACS: Taylor, Sabina, Ben and Maya

Crazy 4 Math is released! Everyone did a great job during the summer completing the album.

October 2006

More Math and Literacy!

Susan, Etienne, and Mr. I

We got to have lunch with my good friend Etienne as he passed through Vancouver on his World Tour. What a great concert. He has an amazing voice; the kids love him; and guess what ... they are learning grammar! He has albums in French, Spanish and English called Grammar Jams. Check out a video from one of his shows on YouTube!

September 2006

Children’s author David Schwartz reads to Nena from his famous book

My Crazy 4 Math buddy, author David Schwartz passed through Vancouver. Nena brought her book G is for Googol to get signed and was ecstatic to meet David. What a great way to inspire both reading and math! Children's author David Schwartz reads to Nena from his famous book, G is for Googol.
