Idea details:

Mom: Why did you decide to have a yard sale?
Julia: I wanted to save up the money to buy a video camera. My dream when I grow up is to be a director and a script writer.

M: How much money did you make at your sale?
J: I made 1,000 pesos which is about $100 dollars.

M: What did you have to do to get ready for the sale?
J: I had to price the stuff. I wrote the price with a permanent marker on masking tape. I had to remember how much we paid for it and cut that amount in half or less. My mom and I buy a lot of used clothes. There is a flea market every Tuesday at which you can buy used clothes for 40-50 pesos so we priced our stuff lower to sell more.

M: What kinds of things did you sell?
J: We sold clothes, my bunk-beds, and some stuff for the kitchen.

M: How did you advertise your sale?
J: I made posters on the computer and hung them up all over town. We hung about 75 posters. We wrote the poster in both Spanish and English. We listed the date, time, and location.

M: What did you do the day of the sale to get ready?
J: First, I counted the change then I laid out the clothes and other stuff.

M: What was it like during the sale?
J: I had to count the change for people. Most people wanted to bargain with us. I had to decide if I would lower my price or not. Knowing that I wanted to save up for my camera, sometimes I would lower the price and sometimes no.

M: What did you do when the sale was over?
J: We still had some stuff and some people rode by and were disappointed that the sale was over so we gave them some stuff for free. Then we had to carry a table upstairs to the apartment and I counted the money I made.

M: Did you get close to what you need for a camera?
J: No, but it's a good start. My mom said she would match whatever I can save. My aunts gave me $32 dollars for my birthday which was July 5th and I'm earning money by entertaining myself while mom works. That way we don't have to pay for a sitter and we save money.

M: Are you proud of what you did?
J: Yes.

M: Would you hold another sale?
J: Yes and we are going to when we go to the U.S. to see my grandma and grandpa. I am going to help my mom with the sale and I'll earn money selling my dolls.

M: Do you have any last comments?
J: I think buying and selling used clothes and things is good because it's a way to recycle. Rather than throwing things away, other people use them.
