Azatara was born very far away and many years ago, but recently has come to live on Planet Dzzzt with her son Cozmo. Azatara and her family have a great fondness for Earth and the children who live there, as they have taught her much about how to learn through laughter and play. Azatara even wears the symbol of Earth's Analemma on her vest to show her love for the planet. Azatara is a magnificent singer and has played with many musicians and in many bands throughout her life. Someday she hopes to try singing opera.
If you took a picture of the Sun at the same time each day it would not remain in the same position. The shape traced out by the Sun over the course of a year is called an analemma. The two effects that cause the sun's apparent shift (the analemma) are:
- The Earth is tilted on its axis 23.5° in relation to the plane of its orbit around the sun.
- The Earth does not orbit the sun in a circle, but in an ellipse.
The Sun will appear at its highest point of the analemma during summer and at its lowest during winter. Analemmas created from different Earth latitudes would appear at least slightly different, as well as analemmas created at a different time each day.
Notice that the green colored Earth travels around the sun in a perfect circle. Its speed never varies. The blue colored Earth travels around the sun in an ellipse (true path of the earth). Its speed is greatest in January when it is closest to the sun. Its speed is slowest in July when it is farthest away from the sun.
Azatara's son Cozmo is a lively 7 earth-years-old boy. He loves helping other children and has become good friends with Nena from Earth. They correspond regularly through Universe-mail. Cozmo set up the first Crazy 4 Math Club and now helps other children set up their own clubs. He loves meeting all the Great Thinkers. He is great at building virtual constructions, loves his space board and enjoys the Earth sport baseball. He aspires to go to the University of Dzzzt, where all of his family studied before him. Both Azatara and Cozmo are good friends of the Googols and have joined with them in their mission to show children the secret of discovery.
El Mundo Truquito is a Great Wizard, from a long family line of very great Wizards. A distant relative of Azatara, he came with his family to live on Earth many centuries ago. He has a kind heart and tries to help out whenever he can. El Mundo has traveled and lived all over the world. Currently he is living in Vancouver, Canada, where he is the guardian of his niece Nena. He loves music, cooking and sailing. El Mundo is an exceptional singer and was in a band with Azatara many years ago.
The Monster Kids live in Nena's closet. These two have great imaginations and can go anywhere or do just about anything in their own pretend world. They like to hide out and watch what the kids are learning. Maya is five years old and has just started monster kindergarten. She is a good big sister and is always helping to teach her little brother. Colin is three years old. He is very proud to be in monster pre-school. He is very curious about — and a little bit scared of — humans.
Nena's full name is Andrea Christina Juanita Lupita Maria Del Carmen; however, she prefers to be called Nena. She is studying very hard and training to become a Great Wizard someday, like her Uncle Mundo, so that she can help children learn more math. She plays soccer and loves art and singing. Nena spent most of her childhood in Montreal, but recently moved to the West Coast to live with her uncle. Since then she has made many new friends and has even set up the first Crazy 4 Math Club in Vancouver
Archimedes was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and philosopher. He is considered one of the greatest mathematicians to live and practice during antiquity (800 BC - 400 AD).
Benjamin Franklin was a famous inventor. Of all his inventions, he was most satisifed with the glass armonica — a musical instrument played by rubbing your wet fingers over rotating glass bowls.
The glass armonica (also known as glass harmonica) was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761. His idea was inspired after hearing music performed with a set of glasses filled with water. Mr. Franklin turned the bowls on their side and arranged them on a spindle which was rotated by a foot treadle. The instrument was played by rubbing wet fingers over the rotating glass bowls. It was a popular instrument during its time and both Mozart and Beethoven wrote compositions for its use. The instrument was abandoned for a long time after it had been rumored that it was harmful to the players health (causing lead poisoning and nervous disorders).
In 1982 Gerhard Finkenbeiner re-introduced the instrument using quartz crystal to reduce the threat of lead-poisoning.
Galileo was an Italian physicist, astronomer, and philosopher. His achievements include improvements to the telescope, astronomical observations, the first and second laws of motion, and effective support for Copernicanism.
If you need someone loud, Shalaqualoud is the right person for the job.
Zerodd & Xeven, Cozmo's friends from the Black Eye galaxy, also called the "Sleeping Beauty" galaxy and found in Coma Berenices (visible in the northern hemisphere in spring and summer and located between Virgo and Ursa Major). The conspicuous dark structure is a prominent dust feature obscuring the stars behind.
