Watch Free Video Clips From Project Mathematics Story of Pi
The program opens with a reporter interviewing young people, asking "What can you tell me about the number pi?" Students are not able to give correct answers. The program defines pi, shows how pi appears in a variety of formulas and throughout history with some animation. The next segment describes different rational estimates for pi obtained by various cultures, and points out that pi is irrational. The program returns briefly to the reporter, who interviews the students again, asking, "Now what can you tell me about pi?" This time, each student gives a different correct statement about pi. The concluding segment explains that major achievements in estimating pi represent landmarks of important advances in the history of mathematics. Watch it now.

Think About Other Days You Could Celebrate Pi Day
Besides March 14th (which uses the American date standard of 03/14), there are other days to celebrate pi. Pi Approximation Days may be observed on several dates, most often July 22 (22/7 using the European date format) which is the most popular approximation for pi. We could also celebrate on November 10th (the 314th day of the year) or November 9th in a leap year. One could also celebrate Pi in December on the 355th day at 1:13 for the Chinese approximation 355/113. You could even choose February 27th when the Earth is estimated to have traveled 1 radian (equal to 180/π degrees) of its orbit since the New Year.
