I use math when I go shopping at the mall. I use math to see how much money I need to use. Sometimes I want to buy stuff that is too much and then I must subtract the prices to see what I need to put back.

Teaching my Nephew

I use math when playing with my nephew. He is 4. We read and count all the clouds or ducks in a book, and we add the amount from one page to the amount on the next. We use math a lot. I use it when playing school too.

Math in Basketball

I like to play Basketball. There is a lot of ways you can earn points in Basketball. There are three pointers, two pointers, dunks — worth one point — and fouls, worth two and three pointers so if I make a three point shot twelve times in a row I would earn thirty-six points for my team. Sometimes it gets confusing but I check what I'm doing wrong and I figure out the answer.

Working at Dad's Store

Math is my favourite subject. My father has a shop. So since I was a kid, I had to learn to count from being a cashier. As a cashier I use addition, multiplication, measurement, money and much more.

I started counting the stock (inventory) when I was 8.

When the factory lorry brought stock to the shop, I had to count it using addition and multiplication. It was very fun and I liked it a lot.

Fibonacci Flowers

I arrange the plants in the garden in groups according to the terms of the Fibonacci sequence.

Counting Farm Machinery

My dad is a farmer. I used to count the steps on each piece of machinery. I would tell my mom that Grandpa's combine 2 less steps than dad's combine. The swather has 4 steps and the John Deere baler tractor has 3. The Deutz tractor has only 2. And the old putt-putt John Deere has only 1 large step. It is cool to count them. I did all of this counting when I was in Kindergarten and my mom was at work and I had to help dad with harvest when I wasn't at school.

Carnival Games for Chores

It's a carnival game for doing chores. I get tickets for certain things. I do different chores for different amount of tickets. They add up and then I can pick prizes and cash them in say for a sleep over — it's 150 in tickets. Every time I pick up socks and stuff I get one ticket — cleaning my room is five. If mom asks me to do something and I don't — I also get tickets taken away. So I always try to do things so the ticket add up. Right now I have almost enough for a "take a friend to the movies night" which is 50 tickets.

Jewelry and Math

My favorite hobby would have to be making jewelry. I use math to count and make sure I have the right amount beads to string. When I go to Gem Fairs I have to add up the amount of money per strand depending on the price. I have to know how long the cord is or it may not fit and I have to start all over.

Swim Team Math

Our team loves this challenge! When I am at swim team practice, my coach times me on how fast I go in a particular race. We record our time. Then we race a second time. If my first time is 1.24 and my second time is 1.17, I know I have taken off .07 seconds! Hopefully I never have to add seconds to my time!
